Ak Saray Palace
Ak Saray Palace in Shakhrisabz
The Ak Saray Palace in Shakhrisabz is the only portal of the grandiose residence of Amir Timur (Tamerlane) that has survived to our times. Construction began in 1380 and work continued for more than 20 long years until Tamerlane's death. The grandeur of the palace was that a rooftop pool was built from which a beautiful waterfall flowed. The water in the pool flowed along the chute from the surrounding mountains.
About 50 thousand slaves were involved in the construction of the Ak Saray palace and the best architects of Tamerlan’s empire were involved from all over. Ak Saray in Uzbek means “White Palace” or “White House”. Ak Saray Palace in Shakhrisabz is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
